De Sphinx (1899)

De Sphinx (1899)

Crystal, glass and pottery factory De Sphinx in Maastricht originated from glass cutting and blowing Regout & Co in 1899. In 1925 De Sphinx merged with glass factory Stella to form the Kristalunie and a later merger with the Société Céramique led to the name NV Sphinx- ceramic. In 1959 the company obtained the designation “Royal”. In the twentieth century, De Sphinx was part of various companies such as Wisa BV, Gustavsberg and Sanitex through takeovers and divisions. In 2009, the Sphinx factories in Maastricht were closed. To date, there is still a Sphinx showroom there as part of Geberit BV

The Sphinx produced both glass and pottery. Many models from the nineteenth century were inspired by English ceramics. The gingham motif is still known today, which was later also made by other manufacturers. From the 1960s, De Sphinx no longer focused on utensils, but on ceramic sanitary ware, baths and taps.
