Charles Rochussen (Kralingen, 1814 - Rotterdam, 1894) was a Rotterdam artist and designer. He was one of the most famous painters and illustrators of his time, admired by Van Gogh and Breitner. Charles Rochussen was educated at the academy in The Hague. After a long period of working in Amsterdam (from 1849 to 1869), Rochussen returned to Rotterdam. Rochussen was a leading personality in nineteenth-century Rotterdam. The Rotterdam notable was both an artist and designer (of, for example, historical processions) and administrator (of the Rotterdam academy and various cultural organizations). Rochussen mainly painted many scenes from Dutch history. In the first half of the nineteenth century, these history paintings were highly regarded. Art had to resemble that of the Golden Age and tell a story, preferably about events from the Eighty Years' War. He was the guest of King Willem III at Paleis Het Loo. For decades, history has been seen as Rochussen entrusted it to the canvas. Later, however, many thought it was becoming too modern. He started painting more loosely, more in the vein of the emerging impressionism. Rochussen therefore lived at the breaking point of two eras: the period that borrowed its values from the past and the time in which art tried to free itself from the old traditions. Charles Rochussen died at the age of 80 in 1894 and is buried at the General Cemetery Crooswijk. In the Rotterdam district of Dijkzigt, a road is named after Charles Rochussen: the Rochussenstraat.
