Antoine Charles Horace Vernet also: Carle Vernet (Bordeaux, August 14, 1758 - Paris, November 17, 1835) was a French painter, draftsman and graphic artist. He was the youngest son of Claude Joseph Vernet and the father of Horace Vernet. He became known for Napoleonic war scenes, hunting scenes, landscapes and genre pieces. His history paintings were frequently reproduced as lithographs, which were widely distributed. Relay for life - Vernet was trained by his father and Nicolas-Bernard L_pici_. He won the Prix de Rome and left for a study trip to Italy, from where he was recalled by his father because he intended to join a monastic community. In his painting Victory of Paulus Aemilius he broke with the traditional depiction of horses and drew on his own observations in stables and riding schools. After Vernet's sister was killed by guillotine during the French Revolution, he gave up the art for a while. When he started painting again during the government of the Directoire ( 1795?1799), he took a completely different approach in his work. He began to draw and paint richly detailed acts of war for the greater honor and glory of Napoleon Bonaparte. This work was appreciated by the rulers. He received the L_gion d'honneur from Napoleon for his painting Dawn of Austerlitz. King Louis XVIII awarded him the Order of Saint Michael. His later work again includes hunting scenes with horsemen. In 1788 he was admitted as a member of the _cole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and in 1810 the Acad_mie des Beaux-Arts. In addition to his artful depiction of battles, horses and dogs, he also made humorous work. His genre pieces are now especially valuable as a source of cultural-historical information.
