Bing en Grondahl (1853)

BING & GRONDAHL

(Copenhagen 1853)

In 1852 the brothers Jacob and Meyer Bing approached Frederik Vilhelm Grondahl who worked at Royal Copenhagen. Together they wanted to set up the first independent porcelain factory in Denmark. This was accomplished immediately after Grondahl's agreement. The company mainly produced neoclassical porcelain figures that were sold in the gallery of Meyer Bing. When Pietro Krohn became artistic director in 1892, the course of the company changed. This can be seen in the Heron service where the decoration and the asymmetrical patterns show the growing interest in Japan and orientalism. After the Second World War, more attention was paid to mass production, while artistic products were still used in a separate location. Well-known works by Bing & Grondahl included the Seagull series, the humorous sculptures by Sten Lykke Madsen and the blue and white designs that were applied to various products. In 1987 the company merged with Royal Copenhagen.
