Anna Mes (1935)

Anna Mes (Koog aan de Zaan, 1935)

Apart from her drive for honest artistry, Anna Mes, like her great predecessors from Dutch abstract art Ouborg and Nanninga, is above all capable of creating completely convincing abstract paintings. She makes large works with colored areas that are connected to each other as in a patchwork quilt. In the colored areas one finds a lively visual language of surreal signs, carvings and remnants of landscapes and buildings.

Her «discoverer» Leo Duppen, before his appointment as director of the Cobra Museum, represented her as a gallery owner in the late 1980s and early 1990s and praised her in one of his articles for her method, the «écriture automatique» and her complete « surrender to the intuitive». As an active member of the Bergen Artists Center she can be counted as part of the contemporary Bergen School. Much of her work can therefore also be found in collections in that region.

The walks along the beautiful Kamperduinse beach near Alkmaar are often the source of inspiration. During these walks along the coastline, she studies the light and the splendor of colours. In her compositions, that northern light returns again and again, with a bright, overexposed color scheme that has an almost Scandinavian feel. Not surprising, because she stayed in Sweden for quite some time.

Originally a textile designer, she masters many disciplines, such as gouache. These works on paper in significantly smaller format are like small compact poems, which have a different effect on the mind. They are subtle, introverted and intimate, where her canvases are expressive and very «present».

The creation of the paintings and work on paper takes place in small steps. Much of her work does not escape her self-criticism and does not come into the public eye. The Schoorl Foundation Mes - Van Leeuwen (also named after the sculptor, her late life partner Hendrick van Leeuwen) represents its interests in collaboration with Paol & Co. Fine Art, so that Mes has her hands free for her undiminished drive to work.
