Aino Marsio was given the surname Aalto when she married designer Alvar Aalto in 1924. She was a glass designer herself. She studied architecture at the Teknillinen Korkeakoulu (TKK) in Helsinki, graduating in 1920. She has worked with Oiva Kallio, Gunnar Achilles Wahlroos and Alvar Aalto, among others. In 1935, Aino and Alvar founded the furniture and lighting company Artek with Maire Gulichsen and Nils-Gustav Hahlin.
Her functionalist designs were for glass, interiors and architecture were inspired by modernism. The Aaltos were the first architects in Finland to adopt functionalism. She went for affordable mass production. Aalto designed for Iittala, among others. Known for her pressed glassware is inspired by circles in water when the water surface is broken. Her timeless designs have been copied a lot and are still popular.
