Beautiful rare Amsterdam etching and aquatint depicting a view of the Binnen-Amstel and the Halvemaansteegbrug from the rooms at the back of the Frederik Muller auction house on the Doelenstraat. On the right the houses on the Erwtenmarkt, in the background the Waterlooplein.
Literature: Catalogue De Groot no.126 and Boon no.117. Not published by Van Wisselingh.
Willem Witsen was born in Amsterdam on 13 August 1860 and died there on 13 April 1923.
Education at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam.
Student of August Allebé. Teacher of, among others, Dirk Harting and Willem Hofker.
Besides the Netherlands, he worked in London, Venice, San Francisco and Indonesia.
Was one of the so-called Tachtigers and very friendly with Georg Hendrik Breitner.
Painter, watercolourist, graphic artist and photographer. Best known for his Amsterdam cityscapes.
