Willem Witsen was born in Amsterdam on 13 August 1860 and died there on 13 April 1923.

Besides the Netherlands, he worked in London, Venice, San Francisco and Indonesia.
Was one of the so-called Tachtigers and very friendly with Georg Hendrik Breitner.
