Willen Witjens 1884 - 1962
Willem Witjens (name variant: Jan Willem Hendrick Witjens) was born on November 8, 1884 in The Hague and died on February 14, 1962 in Berne near Zaltbommel (according to others in 's-Hertogenbosch). Witjens studied art at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. He was a student of Eduard Willem Frederik Kerling Jr. and Herman van der Weele, among others. He later counted Wim van den Anker, Gerard Menken, Alexander Theo van Ravenswaaij, Isabel de Reede and Dammes Smit among his own pupils. In addition to being a gifted watercolorist, Willem Witjens was also a very deserving (glass) painter, lithographer and draftsman. As an artist he mainly worked in the Betuwe (Nederhemert, Zaltbommel and Berne) and in The Hague. His works mainly represent winter, village, city and harbor views, figure representations, (river) landscapes, nudes and still lifes. In 1915 and 1916 he was awarded the Royal Prize for Painting. Witjens was a member.
