Biography:
Willem Johann Martens was born in Amsterdam in 1839 and received his first painting lessons from the famous history painter Nicolaas Pieneman. Martens' oeuvre includes landscapes and church interiors as well as well-characterized portraits and genre pieces. He traveled to Berlin and spent a long time in Rome, where he was a member of the artists' association Gli Acquerellisti. After that, Martens increasingly focused on the genre that is sometimes called 'Italienne'.
