About the Artist:

Sjoerd Bakker is highly fascinated by Southeast Asia and Japan. In his graphic work and watercolors, the influence of these is clearly recognizable, among other things by the simplicity of form and color. The work radiates a mystical peace. The often evenly colored background of his works with a number of carefully drawn ornaments in the foreground underline the Japanese influences once again.

Sjoerd Bakker's works are usually elongated in shape and are reminiscent of classic Japanese prints. In Sjoerd Bakker's work, contemporary objects appear in tranquil landscapes. The viewer becomes aware of reality. Other objects refer to the temporality of existence. The eternal versus the temporary is often depicted with humor. A travel grant for Japan, long ago, eventually brought Bakker to a wooden house at the foot of Fuji-san, the holy mountain of this nation. He stayed there for three months and it turned out to be a permanent injury in the artistic sense. After that, Sjoerd Bakker returned to this country for years, made many trips there and exhibited even more often. The nature that is beautiful there, often became the starting point for my etchings and paintings. In the foreground an object, or a trace of human presence or absence.
