Romain Malfliet - (1902-2006) | Kalkhaven Dordrecht II 44/50

As the son of a head train guard, Romain Malfliet was not encouraged to become an artist, but he went his own way anyway. He was educated at the Sint-Lucasschool in Ghent, at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and the National Higher Institute of Fine Arts, also in Antwerp. His teachers included Walter Vaes, Jules De Bruycker and Paul Artôt.
Malfliet is best known as an etcher of picturesque corners in the Waasland, Antwerp and other Flemish villages and cities. His work is preserved in the print rooms of Antwerp, Brussels, Dendermonde and Sint-Niklaas. In 1979 Willem Persoon published a book about his personal friend under the title Romain Malfliet en het land van Waas, with 199 images of Malfliet's etchings. In 1980 the second book followed, Antwerp Romain Malfliet. From 1934 to 1975 Romain Malfliet was a drawing teacher at the academies in Hemiksem, Temse and from 1951 in Sint-Niklaas. He was also a member of the Pictura circle and the Royal Wase Art Circle.
