Rogier Willems (1969-) is an artist, set designer and teacher. He focuses almost exclusively on the portrait, with which he wants to evoke a moment of quiet introspection with a rough touch. The portrait is an inexhaustible source of inspiration for him. In his technique, rooted in the classical tradition, a stubborn painting touch increasingly prevails. His approach is characterized by careful looking and measuring after which the portrait is set up with a powerful and expressive touch. He has recently embraced the woodcut as a technique, which he also uses to make portraits.
As a teacher, he is affiliated with the Wackers Academy and the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague (Academy–wide Education and School for Young Talent). Rogier regularly gives weekend portrait courses throughout the Netherlands. Every two years he teaches for a week in the leafy Ardennes, where he explores portrait and model painting in depth. Until 6 years ago, Rogier also taught drawing at a VMBO-LWO for adolescents with learning and behavioral problems. He is affiliated with BEER music theater as a set designer and graphic designer and regularly designs scenographies for various other companies.
