Robert Cox (1934-2001) born in Mt Holly, New Jersey, studied from 1953 to 1956 at the Katharine Gibbs School of Art and then joined Mayhew Peakes Inc. as a graphic designer. He resigned in 1962 and moved to California, where he married Marjorie Cox in 1966.
He found much of his floral design inspiration in California and became one of the most prolific painters of the 1970s and 1980s. He used a palette knife to create his stylized flowers and often sold his paintings for little money because he believed that original art should be available to the general public.
Cox was a founding member of the Art Workers Coalition and very active in promoting artists' rights.
