Pieter Defesche Petrus Johannes (Pieter) Defesche (Maastricht, 22 April 1921 – Ulestraten, 13 July 1998). Defesche studied at the Secondary School of Applied Arts in Maastricht and the State Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam. Defesche was strongly influenced by his teacher at the State Academy Heinrich Campendonk. He was a fellow student of Karel Appel and Corneille. Defesche produced paintings, gouaches and graphics. He mainly painted landscapes, still lifes and biblical scenes in an expressionist, almost abstract style. He also made collages, murals, sets and costumes, including for the Scapino Ballet. Defesche's lyrical-abstract painting style of the 1950s, in which blues and browns predominated, made way for colourful contrasts and greater clarity around 1960. In the early 1970s he developed a way of painting that has not changed significantly since then. However, there were continuous shifts in emphasis within his visual language. With the landscape as his starting point, Defesche painted a reality that can be experienced as mythical, in which he constantly tacked between figuration and abstraction. Defesche belongs to the group in painting, together with Ger Lataster, Jef Diederen, Lei Molin, Pierre van Soest, Jan Stekelenburg, Frans Nols and Harry op de Laak, also known as 'the Amsterdam Limburgers'. In 1949, Defesche received the Prix de Rome. In 1964, he received the European Prize for Painting from the City of Ostend.
