Born as a farmer's son on 5 July 1932 in Galamadammen near Koudum, Piet de Vries worked in his later life at the Agricultural Extension Service. De Vries was a very versatile person and very creatively minded. He was a very meritorious self-taught painter, who excelled in his etchings and pen drawings in particular.
Besides drawing and painting, Piet de Vries had another passion: theatre and revue. He directed theatre companies, wrote Frisian plays and also has a number of revues to his name.
The etcher De Vries was exceptionally productive. Hundreds of different etchings from his hand have found their way into just as many living rooms. Mainly in the North of the country, but as a reminder of Friesland his etchings were also purchased in the rest of the country and even abroad. It mainly concerns Frisian landscapes, well-known villages and striking buildings.
Piet de Vries passed away on December 16, 2003 in Drachten.
