Peter Klashorst (Santpoort-Noord, 1957, died 2024) also known as Peter van de Klashorst studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam from 1976 to 1981, where he graduated cum laude. Here he met the Van der Ploeg brothers: Maarten and Rogier, with whom he had several bands (Interior and Soviet Sex) and a pirate radio station (PKP TV). Peter Klashorst worked and works mainly as a painter, sculptor and photographer and is best known for his figurative work and his travels to New York, various countries in Africa, Cambodia and other Asian countries. Peter Klashorst enjoyed great fame, especially during the nineties and around the millennium.
Immediately after graduating, he acquired some fame with 'De Nieuwe Wilden', a neo-expressionist movement modeled on the German 'Neue Wilden'. In 1987, Klashorst started 'After Nature' and the associated Amsterdam Institute for Painting under the motto: go paint, paint a lot and paint what you see. 'After Nature' opposed abstract expressionism and, against the spirit of the times, advocated figurative painting. Landscapes, still lifes, portraits and nudes formed the most important repertoire.
Both his personal and professional life have had their fair share of controversies. For example, he once had to flee Senegal because he was arrested following his alleged relationships with his many nude models in the predominantly Islamic country. Since 2000, Klashorst has lived and worked in Thailand. In 2011, Peter Klashorst took part in a Unesco-supported project to portray victims of the Khmer Rouge.
