Otto Hanrath was born in 1882 in Amsterdam. He was taught by Albert Hahn. He was a painter, watercolorist, draftsman and graphic artist. His subjects were mainly portraits and figure studies, but also landscapes, still lifes and nudes. His style is related to the 'New Objectivity'. In 1926 he founded the artists' association 'De Brug' together with Johan van Hell and Dirk Nanninga. Preferably, the members of this association worked in an objective, new business style. Hanrath was interested in human attitudes in his portraits and figure pieces. He wanted to portray his strength and weakness. His works had to be understandable to everyone, even if the scene was painted in a modernist style. He was also a member of the Independents, St. Luke and Arti. He was a good friend of the painter Jan Heyse.
