- Very rare and original! Three (3) individual black ink on paper drawings from 1940. Drawings/study sketches of life in the German prisoner of war camp STALAG (StammLager) 9A Ziegenhain. Separately signed and dated. Good condition - some old folding marks. Framed in a double glazed frame. Each drawing measures 13 x 17 cm (5.2 x 7 inches). Framed dimensions are 30 x 53 cm (12 x 21.2 inches).
- STALAG IX A Ziegenhain After the invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939, the construction of prisoner of war camps began across the country. STALAG IX A Ziegenhain became the largest of these prisoner of war camps in the area of today's German federal state of Hesse. Until 1945, prisoners of war from many different countries were interned in STALAG IX A: first the Poles and the French, including the later French President François Mitterrand. They were followed by the Dutch, the Belgians, the British, the Serbs, the Italians and the Americans. From October 1941, many thousands of Soviet prisoners of war arrived at STALAG IX A. They were housed in a separate part of the camp and lived under inhumane conditions. Most of the prisoners of war had to do forced labor in local agriculture and industry.
