Meijs studied at the Secondary School of Applied Arts in Maastricht (1946-1950) as a student of Harry Koolen, among others. She continued her education at the Jan van Eyck Academy (1951-1952), where she was taught by Thé Lau. She travelled extensively and lived for extended periods in South Africa (1958-1961) and Curaçao (1965-1968). The influences of these can be seen in her work.
