Martin Kippenberger (1953–1997) was a German artist known for his versatility and provocative style. His oeuvre included paintings, sculptures, installations and performances, often imbued with humour and irony. In 1995 he created this small collage on a postcard, based on one of his paintings. On this card he changed the original text “1. Preis” (1st prize) to “1/2 Preis” (half prize), which reflects his tendency to subvert conventions and play with language.
Kippenberger led an intense and often excessive life , which eventually led to health problems. He died on March 7, 1997 at the age of 44 from liver cancer, partly caused by his long-term alcohol use. His early death robbed the art world of one of its most dynamic and influential figures.
Works by Martin Kippenberger are rare because he died at a young age.

This book analyses the role of the medium of language in the work of Martin Kippenberger from different perspectives. Kippenberger published no less than 149 artist's books during his lifetime and had a very respectful, but at the same time ambivalent relationship with the medium of book, as his publisher Walther König explains in an interview. In addition to classic art and cultural historical texts, the book also contains other text categories, such as conversation reports, a literary work, an artist's statement and texts by Martin Kippenberger himself. This makes it clear how Kippenberger dealt with language in a playful but at the same time serious and uncompromising way.
Instead of a traditional biography, the book contains an artistic photo essay: "Martin Kippenberger seen by Elfie Semotan".
