This book analyses the role of the medium of language in the work of Martin Kippenberger from different perspectives. Kippenberger published no less than 149 artist's books during his lifetime and had a very respectful, but at the same time ambivalent relationship with the medium of book, as his publisher Walther König explains in an interview. In addition to classic art and cultural historical texts, the book also contains other text categories, such as conversation reports, a literary work, an artist's statement and texts by Martin Kippenberger himself. This makes it clear how Kippenberger dealt with language in a playful but at the same time serious and uncompromising way.
Instead of a traditional biography, the book contains an artistic photo essay: "Martin Kippenberger seen by Elfie Semotan".
Martin Kippenberger (1953–1997) was one of the most provocative and influential German artists of the late 20th century. His multidisciplinary practice encompassed painting, sculpture, installation, and graphic work, often incorporating satirical, politically charged, and self-referential elements. A key figure in postmodern and neo-expressionist art, Kippenberger challenged the conventions of the art world and frequently incorporated humor and absurdism into his work.
