Marius Bauer (1867 – 1932)
Bauer was a Dutch painter. He became most famous for making etchings and lithographs with oriental scenes and he is therefore called the most famous orientalist in the Netherlands.

Marius Bauer was born into an art-loving environment, the children learned to draw at an early age. He had an older brother, the architect Willem Cornelis Bauer.
Bauer attended the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague from 1878 to 1885, where he was taught by his contemporary Breitner, among others. He was a member of Pulchri Studio and Arti et Amicitiae. In 1888 he made a study trip to Constantinople. From that moment on, the 'East' was his main subject. He then made many trips to Spain, Russia, Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, India, Ceylon and the Dutch East Indies. He was enabled to do this by the Amsterdam art dealer Elbert Jan van Wisselingh, who paid for his trips abroad and provided him with an allowance to live on.

Bauer made numerous etchings, but also watercolours and oil paintings of oriental cities, camels, elephants, Arabs and mosques. His style can be described as impressionistic. He was strongly influenced by the Hague School in both technique and use of light. Marius Bauer was one of the few Dutch artists of the 19th century who devoted himself exclusively to orientalism.
He based his work on his sketches that he made on the spot and on photos that he bought along the way. Once home, he developed the sketches into full-fledged works of art. These works were not true to life, but based on the personal impressions that Bauer had gained in the East. They often breathe the dreamy atmosphere of the stories from the Arabian Nights.
Bauer was already a famous artist during his lifetime. He received several awards and prizes. For example, he won several prizes at the Hague Academy and Bauer was appointed Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau.
His works were widely acquired by private collectors in the early 20th century, also abroad, such as in the United Kingdom. The etchings he made are highly valued by some experts for their high quality.
Later, a number of his works were added to the collections of various museums, either through purchases or donations.
