Veere (Ter Veere in Zeeland) is a municipality in the Dutch province of Zeeland on the former island of Walcheren and is located northeast of Middelburg. In 1281, Wolfert van Borssele built the Zandenburg and a ferry (Dutch veer) with a ferry house to connect it to Noord-Beveland. He called this ferry "Camper-Veer" (after the flatland "de Campen", which was already called campum by the Romans). Later it was known as "de Veer" or "Veere". The Veerse Meer became an inland sea in 1961 with the construction of the Veersegat dam.
