Jan HB Koekkoek was the third son of marine painter Hermanus Koekkoek (1815-1882) and, like his brothers, was trained by his father. His father's influence is visible in the careful romantic painting style and the fine detailing of his early sea and river views. Later, after his move in 1864 to Hilversum in Het Gooi, the cradle of the Laren School, he switched to a looser touch. In a style influenced by the Hague School, he painted mainly beach and sea views and scenes from the life of fishermen from that time on. Jan HB Koekkoek was in turn the teacher of his son Gerardus Johannes Koekkoek (1871-1956). He was a member of Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam. His work can be found in various museums, including the Museum Jan Cunen in Oss and the Rijksprentenkabinet in Amsterdam. In Hilversum there is a street named after Jan HB Koekkoek. He lived in this street with his second wife, Johanna D. Ham and his 2 children from his first marriage and a son from his second marriage. At that time the street was still called Asterstraat. Later the name of the street was changed to JHB Koekkoekstraat. His former home is now a Municipal Monument.
