In 1918 he founded the Groningen Art Circle De Ploeg with Jan Altink and Jan Wiegers, among others, and in the first years he developed his style: expressionistic, and with wax paint. In addition to paintings he produced many drawings, etchings, woodcuts and linoleum cuts. His subjects: the Groningen countryside, the city, the farmers and the water.
In the thirties he made trips to Italy (near Siena), and appreciation for his work grew. His style became more impressionistic and true to nature.
In 1957 he received the crowning achievement of his work: the Cultural Prize of the Province of Groningen.
In 1971, the Johan Dijkstra Foundation was established to manage his estate. The Foundation has many works by Dijkstra and other Ploegschilders in its possession.
