Johannes Wilhelmus Manders was born on 7 December 1936 in Stiphout, Brabant. At a young age, his love for drawing and painting became apparent and it was therefore obvious that he would follow a LO-hand drawing course. He then enrolled at the Academy for Industrial Design in Eindhoven. In Tilburg, he later obtained the MO-handicraft and drawing certificates. Jo Manders was a painter, draftsman and sculptor in abstract, later in illusionistic-realistic style. He was influenced by Har Sanders and his painting of the interior of the Speelhuis hall in Helmond. His subjects were abstract compositions, realistic still lifes and old walls. In addition, the insect world in particular was a source of inspiration for him. In later years, he worked a lot with masks and signs from African cultures. During his artistic career, he continued to teach in secondary education. In the eighties, he won the bronze medal at the European Prize for Painting in Ostend. Jo Manders died tragically. On the evening of Wednesday, March 1, 1995, he and his sister were stabbed to death in her home in Helmond.
