Theodorus Johannes (Do) Thijssen (Amsterdam, 16 June 1879 - ibid., 23 December 1943) was a Dutch writer, teacher and socialist politician. His best-known book is Kees de jongen (1923), which is set in the Amsterdam Jordaan. On Tuesday afternoon, December 28, 1943, five days after his death, Theo Thijssen was buried in a rented grave at the Nieuwe Oosterbegraafplaats in the Watergraafsmeer in Amsterdam, not far from his house of death on the Bredeweg. When the burial rights expired, the grave was cleared in 1955. On the initiative of the director of the cemetery and in collaboration with the Theo Thijssen Foundation, it was decided to place a memorial at the site of his grave. Jan Wolkers was asked to design this monument.
