Johannes (Jan) Petrus Cornelis van Riel (visual artist, painter, watercolourist, draftsman and graphic artist) came to Tilburg in 1918. He first worked as a construction draftsman and went to study at the predecessor of the Academy for Visual Arts in 1931. He then went to the National Higher Institute for Fine Arts in Antwerp and the Académie Colarossi in Paris. Van Riel returned to Tilburg and became known after the Second World War for his oil paintings, watercolours, linos and etchings, mainly expressionist harbour and cityscapes, landscapes and biblical scenes.
