Jan Schonk attended classes at the Academy of Fine Arts and Technical Sciences in Rotterdam.
First working as a freelance artist, he was a freelance designer at the Zuid Holland plateelbakkerij from 1925 to 1930. From 1926 to 1930 he designed utility pottery, vases and pots, (animal) sculptures and relief tiles for Zuid-Holland. After this he designed several animal sculptures for Ivora. After that he only worked as a graphic artist.
After 1931, Schonk devoted himself entirely to graphic art, which is particularly notable for his urge to compose masses, planes, lines and forms into rhythmic chords. With his woodcuts, lithographs and etchings, Schonk is one of the most important graphic artists of the 20th century.
