Since graduating in 1982, Jan has been working as an independent professional visual artist. He did teach for a few years at the creative-technical MBO training St. Lucas in Boxtel and was coordinator of ABS between 2006 and 2012, an organization that offers affordable workspaces for artists in 's-Hertogenbosch.
