The band is slightly loose.
The book is in good vintage condition, with the usual discolouration due to age.
The book contains a text section of 60 pages, with an afterword by the publisher JAAM van Es, followed by an oeuvre catalogue.
There are also 31 pasted lithographic illustrations or heliogravures by Jan Mankes, all in perfect condition. See photo with the table of contents heliogravures. The original woodcut of the cow's milkmaid is missing.
Plasschaert and Havelaar try to get to the core of Mankes and his work in sometimes (baroque) poetic words. It gives a nice picture of the time on the then (1927) already highly appreciated work of Mankes.
Jan Mankes was only 31 years old. His oeuvre, created between 1907 and 1918, includes approximately 150 paintings, mostly small formats, some 100 drawings and over 40 sheets of graphics, mainly etchings and woodcuts. Jan Mankes has gone down in art history as “Holland’s most tranquil painter”.
The work of Jan Mankes can currently be seen in a beautiful double exhibition in Arnhem and Heereveen.
