Luyten studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp from 1878 and attended the famous Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1883. In 1884 he returned to Roermond and became a member of the art circle "Als ik kan". From that time on he became friends with Henry Van de Velde, Jan-Willem Rosier and Leon Brunin and took part in various exhibitions. Influenced by the Hague School and the Barbizon School, he developed into one of the most important impressionist painters of the Low Countries during this period. Later he would also paint genre paintings.
