Jacobus Johannes (Jakob) Smits was born in Rotterdam on 9 July 1855 and died in Mol on 15 February 1928. In 1902 he was nationalized as a Belgian.
Educated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam and the Académie des Beaux Arts in Brussels. Pupil of J.F.Portaels and J.Stallaert. Teacher of Dirk and Gerard Baksteen.
Painter, graphic artist, sculptor, watercolorist and draftsman.
Landscape, still life, animals, cityscape, interior, portrait and genre representation.
