Henri matchavariani (born 1939) is a French painter, calligrapher and illustrator of Georgian origin. He was artistic director in Paris and Milan. He made numerous illustrations for the press (Vogue) and billboards, notably for Air France. He worked closely with Helmut Newton on a project for Cacharel. His art is guided by the elegance of his strokes and his gestures, inspired by the East. His calligraphy follows in the footsteps of Christian Dotremont.
Just a few strokes, as an economy, as a strict necessity for the sign. Just a few strokes, as a vibration of pastel or ink in the silence of my white sheets. Just a few strokes, and nothing more'. Henri Matchavariani.
Henri Matchavariani is also a well-known figure in French cinema: he has done a lot of dubbing work and regularly appears in supporting roles, notably in films by Philippe Claudel, Roman Polanski and others. He recently lent his hand to Michael Douglas in the title role of the Apple TV series Benjamin Franklin.
