Hendrik Werkman lost his father at a young age and ended up in Groningen with his mother and two brothers. Werkman was a printer (self-employed from 1907) and had a small publishing house in Groningen, where in its heyday about twenty people worked. As a member of the Groningen painters' association De Ploeg (founded in 1918), he made various posters, invitations and catalogues for the association's activities.
