henc van maarseveen (1926-2012) was an abstract graphic artist who published theories in addition to his art. He developed his oeuvre within the various graphic groups of which he was a member, including the Grafisch Gezelschap De Luis. Within the theoretical oeuvre, two publications are central: the Ideistisch Manifesto and the later theory of Impossibilism. In the Ideistisch Manifesto, van Maarseveen describes ideistic art, which is based on Plato's theory of ideas. In this, personal abstraction of the artist is central, leading to autonomous works of art. In addition, van maarseveen advocates a sovereignty of art. Van maarseveen developed impossibilism together with a number of other artists in the nineties. They concluded that, despite a growing plurality of artistic expressions, less is possible in art than is generally thought. It is therefore necessary for artists to reflect on their own work and break away from the standards of the official art circuit. The theories of van maarseveen are closely connected to his graphic works. This becomes clearer when he develops the technique of sliding printing in the nineties.
