Harry Wich studied at The Slade School of Fine Arts, University College, London; after training at the Applied Arts School and studying costume history under the supervision of Prof. F. Van Thienen at the State Academy in Amsterdam; followed by two years of Würtembergisches Staatstheater Stuttgart as a student of set designer Prof. Gerd Richter. Wich made his debut as a set and costume designer with Het Ballet Rambert for the full-length ballet Persephone at the Sadlers Wells Theater in London. The designs with which he graduated attracted so much attention that De Nederlandse Opera asked him in 1955 to design a set for Hans and Grietje by Engelbert Humperdinck. After a raid on De Nederlandse Comedie a few months later, his name was established. In the many years that followed, he also worked for Dutch National Ballet, Toneelgroep Theater and Ensemble. But Harry Wich made more than half of his approximately two hundred sets for The Hague Comedie, first as a freelancer, later as a permanent employee.
