De etsen van Gerda Smit (geboren in Utrecht 1934 – overleden in Eindhoven 2004) herken je snel. Haar geheel eigen directe stijl heeft ze zich vrij snel eigen gemaakt en is ze altijd trouw gebleven. Na jaren in het kleuteronderwijs gewerkt te hebben koos ze voor een opleiding aan de kunstacademie om graficus te worden. Ruim 18 jaar schiep ze mensen, kinderen, dieren en situaties die heel dicht op je huid komen. Je gaat bijna als van zelf van haar etsen houden: de (geraffineerde) eenvoud, de kleuren die lijken te leven en de invoelbaarheid van de afbeelding.
