Information about the artist:
Gerard van de Weerd (Hoogeveen, September 8, 1952 - January 30, 2022), watercolorist and painter.
-Education: the Minerva Academy in Groningen (1976-1981) where he was taught by Matthijs Röling, Ben van Voorn and Jan van Loon, among others.
Gerard van de Weerd painted and watercolored landscapes, still lifes, interior studies and figures in an impressionistic style . He is counted among the Northern Realists and was a member of the Drents Schildersgenootschap (from 1981) and of the Northern Watercolorists .
Many of his paintings have a Drenthe link. For example, he captured the Drenthe dolmens on a large canvas, which has been given a beautiful place in the provincial house in Assen. Peat workers in Drenthe and the cattle market in Hoogeveen have also been immortalized in paint by him. He also worked on paintings about the first generation of Moluccans in Hoogeveen.
Gerard van de Weerd's work has been purchased by art lovers in the Netherlands and abroad. He was friends with singer Frank Boeijen. Comedian Youp van 't Hek was also known to him. Gerard van de Weerd painted a series of portraits of Youp van 't Hek, Liesbeth List and Anne Wil Blankers on behalf of Stichting De Hooghe Kamer in Hoogeveen.
Harry Tupan, director of the Drents Museum, described Gerard van de Weerd as a 'rock and roller with an angelic heart'.
