His work consists mainly of Amsterdam cityscapes and folk scenes of the Jewish quarter around the Waterlooplein and of the Jordaan, and mainly depicts the working life of the simple Jewish population. Staller had a preference for the fringes of society; market traders, merchants and fishmongers frequently appear in his work.
