François Leopold De Vadder   (called Franz De Vadder) ( Bruges ,   December 2nd 1862   – there,   1936 ) was a Belgian romantic-realist painter, etcher and especially watercolorist. He was the son of Joannes Ludovicus (Jean) De Vadder and Louise De Klerck. The same family included a brother (Adolphe) and two sisters (Marie and Justine).

De Vadder received his education at the Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts. Here he learned the basics of painting people and animals from the celebrated painter   Karel Verlat , painting landscapes by   Joseph Van Luppen   (1834-1891) and the "drawing from real life" by   Polydore Beaufaux . He obtained the "Prix d'excellence, peinture de paysages et animaux" in 1883. During this period he became friends with his fellow students   Leon Delderenne   and   Henry Rul .

After this Franz De Vadder went to Paris and perfected his talents at the   Academy of Fine Arts   at the portraitist   Hippolyte Flandrin   and in the studio of   Thomas Couture   (1815-1879). He also had contact with   Gustave Courbet .

In 1889 he stayed in   Kalmthout . He lived there in the village street, directly opposite the St. Jacob's Chapel (which he would depict twice on canvas). During that period he painted a number of views of the Kalmthout heath. After this he moved to a studio in the Regentstraat in   Antwerp . Here he met his friend Henry Rul again. Together they often went on the road to the most beautiful spots of the Kalmhoutse heath. [ 1 ]   He is considered one of the   Kalmthout School . [ 2 ]

He became a teacher at the Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts in 1877 and was appointed director in 1885. He played an important role in Antwerp's artistic life during that period.

He lived or stayed for quite some time in   Sint-Amands . He rented a room in a lodging house in the Kerkstraat. Here he became a good friend of the painter   Romain Steppe . He was inspired by the banks of the   Schelde , but also painted in the wider area. He was buried at his request in Sint-Amands next to the grave of Romain Steppe.

Most of his works are in private hands, but some paintings were purchased by the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels and Antwerp.
