- Frans Berntsen was devoted to water his whole life. Born in Nijmegen, his love for it was undoubtedly awakened by the passing Waal. You imagine a little boy, wandering along the quays and in the harbours, playing in the floodplains, connected to the river that defined his youth. Later he had his own ship: the boeier ?St. Lucas?, with which he sailed for a few months in the summer from 1930 onwards. His paintings reflect his passion for water and everything connected to it. There are (harbour) representations of Antwerp, Amsterdam, Dordrecht and Vlissingen. He captured the cities around the Zuiderzee (Urk, Yerseke, Enkhuizen) and along the IJssel (including Zutphen), as well as the Zeeland waters and the Wadden. The Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen has work by Frans Berntsen in its collection.
