Fedor van Kregten is a self-taught artist; not a member of an artist society and with little contact with fellow artists. That sounds withdrawn and lonely, but Fedor van Kregten was anything but: he married twice, moved house all the time and had no fewer than eleven children who were born in eight different places. He had a busy family life and also produced a very high number of paintings: a hard worker, that's what he was.
He lived and worked mainly in the northeastern provinces, and from 1906 in The Hague. The Hague School and nature in the countryside were his sources of inspiration. He captured many cows and calves: he was incredibly good at that, and he became famous for it. His calves are eternally young.
After 1929 he travelled to Spain and Morocco where he also painted, but his rustic scenes with cattle and beautiful skies have become and remained the best known. And rightly so!
