Eja Siepman van den Berg Torso I 1999 lithograph 50 x 33 cm
provenance: Direct from the artist
Eja Siepman van den Berg 1943 - Eja Siepman van den Berg studied at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam (1962-1967). Her career took off immediately when she won the Prix de Rome in 1967. As a sculptor, she is related to the ideas of Charlotte van Pallandt, at the time one of the few women who held her own in a male-dominated sculpting world. In 1978, she was the first winner of the Charlottte van Pallandt Prize, a national prize for young talent up to 35 years old. The human body is her starting point. And then she starts to reduce. How much can you remove without losing the humanity of the image? The artist is relentless in that process. More and more elements disappear. What remains is a clear symmetry, wavy curves and shiny bronze. She has found a perfect balance between figuration and abstraction. Her images are made of bronze and marble. In 2017, her classical yet so modern oeuvre was awarded the prestigious Wilhelminaring. Her work is represented in both museum and private collections. Her sculptures can be admired in many places in public spaces.
