● "Britain is an extraordinarily sick society and the claim that one is a well-adjusted member of it is a declaration of insanity. I am happy to tell you that I am hopelessly maladjusted.  Those seeking asylum in the Britain of today will find one." - Dominic Rouse (The Artist's Journal, October 2010)

Dominic Rouse is an English fine art photographer who began his career as a photojournalist in the mid-1970s. His art is defined by his meticulous attention to detail and a painstaking devotion to the traditional craft of large-format photography. His photographs place him in direct kinship with René Magritte, Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, Jerry Uelsmann, Arthur Tress and Maggie Taylor - surrealist artists whose images are also entertaining, visually dramatic and dreamlike.

Rouse’s photographs are technically well-crafted, inviting us - even compelling us - into his vivid imagination as he tackles the emotional paradoxes of love and loss, meaning and chaos, life and death, fear and desire, the secular and the divine. His hypnotic images,  rich with sombre undertones of philosophy, explore the relationship of the spirit to the flesh, while his erotic images are equally mysterious, beautiful and challenging.

These illusory, meticulously staged visions tempt us to view him as a magician with numerous tricks up his sleeve, or as Sigmund Freud’s assistant revealing fragments of the master’s subconscious mind.

Sometimes the answer to one question is another. Rouse’s beautifully executed photographs will undoubtedly leave the viewer with many unanswered questions. - Keith Auerbach (2008)
