Fearing that a persistent eye infection would put an end to her painting and drawing, Kuik wrote novels and poems, for which she received several prizes. She was also an art critic for Het Parool.

After her death, a triptych exhibition about Dirkje Kuik was organized at Kunstliefde, and her former home was turned into a museum. She has received several awards for her literary work.
