Dirk Berend Nanninga (born in Arnhem, died in Amsterdam) made it quite far in the art world as an autodidact. He never really broke through with the general public, but his work was highly appreciated in art circles. At the beginning of his artistic career he painted in a style that showed affinities with the Hague School, later his work became more detailed and he tried to depict reality without frills. Nanninga was a board member of De Onafhankelijken for a while, an Amsterdam artists' association that opposed the prevailing art views and put the artistic freedom of its members first. The Ameland museums have detailed etchings of the tower in Hollum and a village view by Nes in their collection. His wife was born on Ameland. That is probably also the reason why he was active as an artist on the island.
