In March 1961, the exhibition Bewogen Beweging (Moving Movement) opened at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. The exhibition brought together artists working in performance, happenings and film, with visual art.
The exhibition was described as the first 'International Exhibition of Art in Motion'. In total, 233 works were shown by eighty-three artists from eighteen countries, including Alexander Calder, Takis, Dieter Roth, Nicolas Schöeffer, Jean Tinguely, Robert Rauschenberg, Niki de Saint-Phalle and Richard Hamilton.
