David Dodsworth was born in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in 1952. In 1969 he decided to go to Lancaster School of Arts to study a foundation course in art and design. At twenty he married Anne and they had a daughter Chloë. The family moved to Sunderland, where Dodsworth enrolled as a painting student at the college. It was in Sunderland that he learned the fundamental technical skills of the draughtsman and printmaker.
Despite the obvious influences of the Abstract Expressionists, Dodsworth refuses to describe himself as an abstract painter. His mission is to offer an art that is accessible. You can see references to Abstract Expressionism, primitivism, religion and technology in his work.
'Dodsworth completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts before setting up his own studio. He experiments with imagery and methods of original printing and papermaking, working with thick paints, gold leaf and metals cut with a jigsaw. He has created a completely individual style that became world famous in 1985.
David’s work is characterised by his use of exotic cast paper and the technique of carborundum aquatint – an innovative approach made famous in original intaglio art by Joan Miro, the master surrealist. In this technique, a silicon carbide mixture is built up on the surface of a copper plate (or a plate of thick plexiglass). When a sheet of moistened paper is pressed against the plate, a highly textured relief is created that can be further manipulated through the application of different pigments and materials. Dodsworth’s imagery is abstract yet pleasing, with many visually exotic techniques and features.
He has won prizes in Japan and Germany and has been accepted into the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers in England. Many of Dodsworth's works have been commissioned by some of the world's largest corporations for their headquarters and his works are represented in many leading galleries in the United States, Canada and Europe.
